Museum Collection

McGee Room

Dedicated to local railroad historian, photographer and Northern Pacific brakeman Warren McGee, this room holds artifacts and photos of Livingston's railroad history from the 1880's through 1986. A ticketing office, uniforms, tools, models, union mementos and dining car table service are all on display. The room also holds an extensive map collection from the 1890's forward.

Whithorn Room

This room is dedicated to Doris Whithorn, founder and longtime director, and her husband Bill who reproduced many of the old photos in the museum's collection. It contains household items, a restored player piano, dining room set built by local blacksmith, dishes from the "Antlers" Boarding House, kitchen appliances and utensils, clothing, children's toys, sewing machines, evolution of the washing machine, pre-electric vacuum sweepers and irons.

VanAken Room

Named for museum founder and board member Vince VanAken, this room currently holds items from Livingston's business past, school room, church and fraternal organizations, OTO - Montana's first dude ranch - display, Bottler family history, and hundreds of historic photos of Livingston and nearby towns.

Native Cultures Room

This room features three prominent archeological sites in the area; the Anzick site, which had the largest, most complete Clovis tool cache ever found, the Meyers-Hindman site showing 9,000 years of occupation, and the Stole bison butcher site. An extensive arrowhead collection as well as lithic materials used are also displayed.

Recreation Room

This area holds rare Yellowstone National Park items from the 1870's to the 1940's. Also included are displays on Calamity Jane, mining, early Yellowston camping, sports, police and sheriff history, photography, 1880's bicycles and more.

Upper landing

This area has display's on rocks, minerals and fossils by the Yellowstone Gem and Mineral Society, 1959 Hebgen Lake quake in Yellowstone, the Hank Lentfer Native American collection and three albino mounts.

Middle landing

The display on this floor is a tribute to veterans of Park County from the Civil War to the present. Featured are possible pieces of a flag from the Battle of Little Bighorn and the USS Maine. Documents from the Civil & Spanish American Wars, WWI & WWII along with artifacts are also on display.

Lower landing

This lobby area displays a Yellowstone Park stagecoach and bobsled, all 50 flags, area Lewis and Clark historical trail display, and 1890's mail carrier paraphinalia. It also features a map of Clark's and Sacajawea's route through the area on July 15, 1806 and biographical information on all thirteen of the crew that went down the Yellowstone River.

Out back

This area holds a complete blacksmith shop, pre-1900 firefighting equipment and 1935 fire engine, sheepherder's wagon, Yellowstone Park surrey, 1850's Depuy Family surrey, first roadgrader in Yellowstone Park, and more.

Caboose Out Front

The 1890's caboose was used locally by the Northern Pacific Railroad. It is set up and open to view as it was equipped and used by trainmen.

Yellowstone Gateway Museum of Park County also houses an extensive library for reference use by Friends of the Museum members and near complete hard-copy collection of all local newspapers. We also try and keep up cemetery records, death and birth records, and many local oral histories are in print.

Newly Finished!! A 100 year old, one room log schoolhouse (Urbach school) is now finished and on display with period desks, stove and books.
