Film Festival

Lights...Camera...Action

Friday, July 20th in conjunction with 2001: a Montana Odyssey, the Story of Film in Livingston, the Livingston Depot will host a one day Film Festival featuring screenings of the first and most recent films made in Livingston along with other film events and activities. From scuba gear to saddles, 2001: A Montana Odyssey, the Story of Film in Livingston is a dazzling trip through Livingston's film history and a look at the contributions that the community, its people and landscape have made to films. This exhibition is partially funded by a grant from the Montana Arts Council.

12:00 -1:00 pm-Brown bag

“Film Friendly” luncheon with Montana Film Commissioner Sten Iverson at The Depot. Sten, who recently took over the reins of the Montana Film Office from former Commissioner Lonie Stimac will present information about the history of the Film Office, the role it currently plays and also give advice and tips regarding building and managing relationships with production companies. Sten will also be available for questions following the program. Whether you want to work for productions, or are interested in providing services to them, this is an interesting and informative program. Sponsored by the Montana Film Office and the Livington Depot Center. The program is open and free to the public. Please RSVP at 222-2300. Bring a lunch from home or pick up an order to go from one of Livingston's fine restaurants!

2:00-3:00pm.

Community premier of “Guide Season” the most recent feature film made in Livingston at the Murray Lounge, which was also a location for the film. “Guide Season” is an ITVS funded digital video project made for PBS in 1999. It is the story of four months in the life of a Montana hunting guide. The film features many familiar Livingston places and some familiar Livingston faces. This program will be introduced by producer Dennis Aig of the Bozeman based Hunter Neil Company, who also produced “Shadow Casting” a behind the scenes documentary on the making of “A River Runs Through It.” The show is free and open to the public. Sponsored by the Hunter Neil Company and the Murray Lounge.

5:30-6:45pm.

The Livingston Depot will host Montana Committee for the Humanities Speakers Bureau program “Montana: High Wide and Hollywoodized” presented by MSU Billings English Professor Sue Hart. From the early days of silent films until the present, this program offers a somewhat irreverent overview of film versions of stories written by Montana authors including A.B. “Bud” Guthrie Jr., Dorothy M. Johnson, Myron Brining, and Will James. Professor Hart will show clips and stills from Montana films along with displaying film related items. Partial funding for the MCH Speakers Bureau program is provided by a legislative grant from Montana’s Cultural Trust. This program is also sponsored by the Livingston Depot Foundation.

6:30-9:30.

Film Reception. In conjunction with a Livingston Gallery Association Artwalk the Livingston Depot will host a Film Reception for those who contributed to 2001: a Montana Odyssey film exhibit, as well as other members of the Film Community. The reception is open to the public and tasty refreshments from Livingston’s finest dining establishments will be served.

10:00pm -11:30pm.

“Rancho Deluxe” the first feature film made in 1974 in Livingston will be screened behind the Depot. This quirky modern-day Western about cattle rustlers targeting a New West rancher was written by novelist and screenwriter Tom McGuane, directed by Frank Perry and stars Jeff Bridges and Sam Waterson. Offbeat humor and colorful characters have made this little-seen gem a cult favorite. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets! The film is being sponsored by Firelight Media and the Livingston Depot. Rancho Deluxe is rated “R”. A $2 donation is suggested.

This is a great time to be out in Livingston! There’s also music at Summer Fest at Sacajawea Park throughout the day, and into the night at the Murray Lounge. Come see the films, enjoy the programs, visit the Depot Museum and see all the galleries that evening.

For more information contact the Depot at 222-2300.
